Starknet Governance: Updated Voting Process

Hi all,

We want to improve Starknet governance by improving the Starknet voting process to be more predictable and thereby more inclusive. This process will be led together by Starkware and Starknet Foundation.
We will thereby follow the following process (t=vote submission deadline):

  • Rolling deadline, until t-4 weeks: anyone can post a complete SNIP into the governance forum.

    • t-4 weeks until t-2.
      • Community deliberates.
      • Unless there are no remarks, SNIP is now final.
    • t-2 weeks until t-1.
      • SNF declares proposal final (marketing post).
      • injects proposal for vote.
  • t-1 until t: Community votes.

Note: in case an emergency upgrade is necessary, the steps above will need to be skipped.

We hope you agree that this change is beneficial for us as an ecosystem as it makes our votes and planned developments more predictable. We look forward to your questions, suggestions or remarks!

Best wishes,

Rafael

Hi, one concern I’ve noticed recently is that there is currently no threshold required to submit proposals to Snapshot. As a result, we’re starting to see more low signal or non critical proposals.

Some of these feel like community engagement questions, which could be better handled as simple polls on X rather than on Snapshot.Snapshot or even governance hub should remain professional spaces for proposing meaningful decisions and protocol improvements.

Other DAOs already address this with clear thresholds, for example, Arbitrum requires 500,000 votable tokens or Uniswap requires 1M UNI to submit a proposal.

I think it’s time for the DAO to at least start discussing a proposal threshold, to keep governance focused and professional.
